8 Ways To Relax In The Midst of Uncertainty

Let’s be honest, we are dealing with some wild and crazy times. No one in their wildest dreams could have imagined that our entire world would be under attack by a common enemy. COVID-19 has taken over our lives. Everything has changes. And while all dealing with the fear of the unknown, many of us are still trying our best to manage the normal stresses that take over our lives every day. Deadlines, proposals, children, finances…the list can go on and on. Because of this, it is vital that we all take a moment to protect our mental, emotional and spiritual health. We cannot allow times like these to break us!

 Relaxing is important, and you shouldn’t expect yourself to be able to totally decompress during times like these, it’s important that we shed as much anxiety as possible, preventing ourselves and our bodies from collapsing under all the pressure.

 Consider these relaxing techniques:

  1. Take a shower. You probably already do this. But if not, you should definitely give it a try. There’s something so therapeutic about washing your stresses away, right down the drain. It’s as if the stress has been drained from your very soul.

    • Consider alternating between cold and hot water. The cold can snap you out of your current mood. And the heat will give you the soothing warmth that will help you relax.

  2. Clench your entire body. Start with your toes and move up your body one muscle group at a time. Clench and flex that muscle with maximum effort. Hold it for a few seconds, relax, and repeat. Flex each muscle 3-5 times and move on to the next. Introducing more stress into your body can help to release that tension.

    • Alternately, try flexing all of your muscles at once. Try both methods and see which provides more relief.

  3. Say hello to your inner Picasso. There are adult coloring books designed to help take your mind off your troubles. Don’t like crayons? Try colored pencils or markers. Use whatever you like and give coloring a try. It’s not just for kids.

    • Coloring puts your attention on something neutral. It can be a form of meditation. You also have the added boost of having created something when you’re done. You might not want to hang it on your refrigerator for the world to see, but at least you have a sense of accomplishment.

  4. White noise. Consider the recorded sounds of ocean waves, rain, a crackling fire, or any other sound you might find soothing. These types of sounds can be very relaxing. Personally, I enjoy the Chillhop and lofi beats playlists on Spotify. It’s not white noise. But I tend to even forget that the music is on. It just sooths me.

  5. Stare at a fire. If you don’t have a fireplace, a candle will do.(I absolutely love candles!) Even high-quality video of a fire will suffice. There’s something primal and hypnotic about fire. Staring into a fire can be a great way to relax.

  6. Stretch. Stretching your body is an effective way to release tension and relax. You don’t need any fancy equipment. Just relax on the floor and do all those stretches you used to do in gym class. Or, stand tall, reach for the sky, then drop down and touch your toes. Whatever works for you. Just stretch the tensions away.

  7. Buy a plant. Plants are relaxing. Walk around the local nursery and find the perfect plant. Take it home, put it in the sun, water it, fertilize it, look at it, and talk to it. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the positive impact a single plant can have in your home. You might even want more than one.

  8. Cry. Holding back a tear is almost the same as holding back a sneeze. It’s just not a wise thing to do. Crying is literally your body’s natural way of releasing sadness, hurt and pain. So, don’t hold back. I cry all the time. Sometimes in public, other times (and usually) within the bounds of my own privacy. But no matter where I am, I allow my body to begin the release of the stress and I take as much time as I need. Remember, there is absolutely nothing wrong with crying.

Create a routine that will allow you to relax at least once each day. Relaxation is important if you want to be at your best. Stress is damaging to your body and mind, so make relaxation a part of each and every day. There are plenty of ways to relax that you’ve never considered. Give one of them a try today.
